What is PD charging? Is’t same thing with Type-C?

The rise of the USB-C is changing smart devices charging in a fascinating way. Both Major smartphones and laptops manufacturers are integrating USB type-C plugs, allowing cross-device charger sharing. Therefore, you can simply charge your phone with your laptop charger, and vice versa. Power delivery (PD) charging is basically a fast charging protocol which is making use of the great functionality and universality.

Breaking the rules!

Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 technology was a breakthrough it terms of mobile fast charging. It can deliver 18W of power using conventional USB data lines “V-BUS”. Although it can charge “QC equipped” smartphones extremely fast. But it is no compliant with the USB safety standards “USB-IF“. On top of that it limited Qualcomm chip equipped devices, So laptops, for example, can’t take benefit of it. On the other hand, Power delivery technology increases the power levels to 100W. What is QC 3.0?

 

QC 3.0 is a charging protocol designed by Qualcomm

What’s qc 3.0? QC 3.0 offers stepless multi-voltage charging from 3.7V to 20V; your device can receive the perfect voltage and current optimized to its exact charging state. Your device needs to support Quick Charge to receive any benefit.

Why is QC 3.0 better than 2.0?

QC3.0 is all about how the power delivery to your device, and less about the actual strength of the power.
The feature of QC2.0 is stepped and violent, while the QC3.0 is natural and smooth.

• QC 2.0 have fixed multivoltage, 5, 9, 12 and 20V. This fixed voltage means, the charging is in voltage stages.
• QC 3.0 can change exact voltage and can be anywhere between 3.7 and 20v, the charging is variable and this increases the overall efficiency of the charge.

In the graph above (assuming charging current keep in identical); you can see the differences in the three charging technologies voltage output.

• The advantage of 3.0 is that it can provide optimal voltage at the precise need of the battery, so during charging you are always at the fastest charging voltage.
• 2.0 jumps in stages, less efficient but still enhances speed.
